Jaime Munguia’s move up to 160 pounds was a successful one, as he battered Gary “Spike” O’Sullivan tonight in San Antonio, winning via 11th round stoppage in a fight that grew increasingly one-sided.

Munguia (35-0, 28 KO) did eat some leather early on from O’Sullivan (30-4, 21 KO), who looked for counter opportunities all night, but found them less and less as the fight went on and Munguia, 23, grew more comfortable.

Munguia showed a good, hard jab in this fight, particularly late, as he used it to beat the will out of O’Sullivan, whose legs went before his heart did. Munguia also did stray low on a couple occasions, losing a point in the sixth round for a very low shot, and he accidentally went low in the seventh, which put O’Sullivan down but was rightly ruled a low blow.

The 35-year-old O’Sullivan just wasn’t able to find the right openings, despite his usual game nature, and by the eighth or ninth round the fight was firmly in Munguia’s control. The end came at 2:17 of the 11th round, when the white towel came in from the Irish veteran’s corner, just as he was being hammered to the canvas against the ropes by the young Mexican warrior.

We’ll see where Munguia goes from here, but as a former titleholder at 154 and an increasingly popular young fighter with a fan base, he’s an interesting option for a lot of fights at 160, and he’s with the right platform in DAZN to get notable fights in the division by the end of 2020. O’Sullivan was tailor-made, but Munguia was still impressive here, and looked a little more confident and a little more polished than he has at times, particularly last year’s fight with the crafty Dennis Hogan.
