According to a report from Mike Coppinger, sources have informed him that former heavyweight titleholder Charles Martin (27-2-1, 24 KOs) will make an appearance on the February 22nd Wilder-Fury 2 card, taking on Gerald Washington (20-3-1, 13 KOs) in an IBF title eliminator.
It’s also being reported that Martin-Washington will be PBC’s featured fight for the co-promotion with Top Rank, with Top Rank obviosuly putting Emanuel Navarrette up against Jeo Tupas Santisima in a 122lb title defense for their side.
Martin, 33, became IBF world champion back in early 2016 when Vyacheslav Glazkov’s knee fell apart during their fight, resulting in a TKO that won Martin the then-vacant title. Martin wouldn’t hold onto that belt for long though, getting knocked out by Anthony Joshua just three months later in only two rounds.
Meanwhile Washington, 37, had his shot at a world title when he faced Deontay Wilder in early 2017. Washington obviously fell short in that outing, getting stopped by Wilder in five rounds, but has managed to hand around despite losing three of his last five fights. This could well be his last shot at putting himself in line for another world title run.
