Talks ‘underway’ for Daniel Dubois vs Joe Joyce

The two were expected to fight for the British title early last year

A major domestic heavyweight showdown between Daniel Dubois and Joe Joyce has grown increasingly probable in the past few months, and now things have progressed further than ever. Frank Warren confirmed today that “talks are underway” for the two to go at it later this year.

This matchup has a bit of history. After Hughie Fury vacated the British heavyweight title early last year, the BBBofC ordered the two to go at it for the belt, and the pair reportedly agreed to do so a month later. Instead, Dubois (14-0, 13 KO) went on to face and destroy domestic rival Nathan Gorman in the third of five 2019 knockout victories, while Joyce (10-0, 9 KO) finished up his own yearly campaign with victories over Alexander Ustinov and Bryant Jennings.

Joyce had been set to face Marco Huck this month for the vacant European title, only for the German veteran to break his hand.

It’s a risky matchup for Joyce, who’s in his mid-30s and seemingly on the cusp of a world title shot, but one filled to bursting with the potential for serious violence. Both possess enormous power and the aggression to bring it to bear. May the talks go well.
