Ivan Redkach fined, suspended, has purse taken for biting Danny Garcia

The New York State Athletic Commission were not amused by Redkach biting Garcia last Saturday.

Danny Garcia took it well, in quite good humor. But the New York State Athletic Commission, not so much.

The NYSAC clanged the gavel down hard on 33-year-old Ukrainian-born, California-based Ivan Redkach for biting Danny Garcia Saturday evening at Barclays Center.

Garcia joked about the chomping incident at the post-fight presser, after he scored a UD-12 victory in a welterweight bout which screened on Showtime.

But the state oversight body didn’t see the matter as a trivial occurrence.

I asked a spokesperson if there would be any response by NYSAC to the bite. The reply:

“The New York State Athletic Commission is taking the following disciplinary action against Mr. Ivan Redkach for biting Mr. Garcia’s shoulder during the eighth round:

  • Mr. Redkach was issued the maximum fine of $10,000 for engaging in dangerous, disorderly and unsportsmanlike conduct.
  • Mr. Redkach’s license as a professional boxer is suspended for a year.
  • Mr. Redkach’s purse from the bout shall be forfeited and paid to the Commission.

Mr. Redkach has the right to challenge these penalties if he so chooses with a formal hearing.”

My three cents: We shall see if Redkach responds with a defense. My guess is yes; I wonder if even Garcia might like to see him get paid most of his purse if he promises to do the right thing with those veneers moving forward. We will keep you informed on the case.
