Notes: A minor tweak here, and I thought about the back end (spots 8-10) quite a bit before settling on keeping it almost the same, switching Vergil Ortiz and Sergey Lipinets. Lipinets went to a very competitive draw with Custio Clayton in a good fight on Saturday, could easily have lost that one, could also easily have nicked it. Ortiz has been smoking decent competition and if you put him head-to-head with Lipinets right now, I just can’t see picking Lipinets, who is a good fighter but lacks special qualities. I’m keeping Mikey Garcia at No. 10 even though he looked like he might be fighting at 168 based on his appearance at Friday’s show in Mexico City.

There are a handful of other guys you could argue into one of these 8-10 spots right now, too, including Jamal James, Custio Clayton now depending on what you thought Saturday, Kudratillo Abdukakhorov, and Egidijus Kavaliauskas. The big potential breakthrough guy other than Vergil Ortiz for 2021 is Jaron Ennis, who has the look of someone who could storm the top tier when he gets the chance. Welterweight is an odd division, more than just being “boxing’s best division!” as PBC in particular tout all the time. It’s really top heavy, in that it falls off a cliff in some ways after the No. 7 spot, but “the top” also arguably goes right down to that No. 7 spot, which is unusual; I know Spence and Crawford have separated themselves from the pack by a bit at this point, but Pacquiao through Ugas are all dangerous contenders, and there are some young names knocking on the door.

Notes: The Davis-Santa Cruz fight coming on Saturday might present a Situation for next week. It’s being fought at 130, for titles at both 130 and 135 (the 135 belt is Davis’ secondary WBA title). If the winner doesn’t state a clear intention of fighting at one weight or the other, I suspect that the winner would be ranked at both weights until a decision is made. I mean, what’s the big loss on the lists then? The Selby-Kambosos (also Saturday) winner or Masayuki Ito? And if a decision is made by the next rankings update, I can just put someone right back in. We’ll see how it shakes out, but figured I’d mention it ahead of time.

Notes: Juan Francisco Estrada and Roman Gonzalez both won on Saturday, convincing victories over major underdogs. Estrada had a rousing war in a rematch with Carlos Cuadras, who may well have put everything he has left into that fight, and Chocolatito won a clear decision over a game but out-classed Israel Gonzalez. This sets up a likely rematch between the two in 2021; Eddie Hearn says he’s working on it, and the word is both fighters really do want it. It might be a case of the purses being right, though, as far as it coming next and, like, by the spring. If there’s nowhere you can put it with a paying audience, that could be tough. Gut feeling is there may be some overzealous calls to bump Chocolatito to No. 2 over Rungvisai, but he lost twice to Rungvisai, and the second one was a wipeout. I know we all love a 1-2 matchup but sometimes something just is a 1-3. Still pretty good!

Notes: Julio Cesar Martinez had a short-notice opponent on Friday in Mexico City, but the fact that Moises Calleros came in as a bantamweight didn’t matter much, as JCM wiped him out in two. Martinez really is one of the most exciting young fighters in the sport today, and he’s starting to talk about going up to 115. Hard to blame him, really. Tanaka is headed up himself, and there’s just not a ton by way of “big fights” available at 112, with due respect to the terrific veteran Moruti Mthalane or the coming Nakatani-Magramo WBO title winner. Personally, I’d love to see him in with Angel Acosta; that could be an absolute banger for however long it lasts.

Notes: Mostly I’m just agreeing with most of you that Estrada deserves and already deserved a top 10 spot, but also I want to do something dumb to this every week I can so that someone might have a diarrhea about THE RULES!!!! of pound-for-pound. But in all sincerity, I will tinker with this a lot, probably. The big thing is that until I came up with an idea that basically forced me to add P4P to the rankings, I hadn’t much thought about P4P in years, which is something I recommend to everyone, quite honestly. So I’m kind of constantly reassessing a few things with it. Also I do listen to the feedback even if I say I don’t and even if I think some of you are way too hung up on P4P in general, and also in thinking there’s some scientific concrete way that it must be measured.
