During this virtual media session with unified welterweight titleholder Errol Spence, Spence talks about his upcoming fight against Danny Garcia and why he didn’t seek out a lesser fight to help shake the rust off. Check out what he had to say below...
Spence on why he didn’t want a tune-up fight coming back from his car accident:
“I picked Danny Garcia so I can rise up to the occasion. You know, I feel like he was a great fighter...I’m still the top dog in the division, top guy in the division, so I feel like he will make me show that I am just a great fighter and he’s a great opponent.
“His dad gets me hype just by him saying how they’re gonna dictate and how he’s gonna come forward and throw punches and this and that, come take the belt from me in my hometown. Every time I fought in my hometown I either got a knockout or just shutout win. So I’m 100% ready for anything they bring to the table, whether it’s come forward, box, or just stand there and fight.
“We can do whatever they need to do but at the end of the day I’m just gonna listen to my coach, dictate the pace and I’m not gonna get into the little head games like with Shawn Porter and things like that because I fought Shawn Porter’s game and I beat him at his own game. I’m sure [Garcia’s] dad wants me to stand there and slug with Danny Garcia, and he got a rock jaw chin, but at the end of the day I’m gonna do whatever I gotta do to win the fight.”
On if he feels he needs fights like this to cement his legacy:
“Definitely, man. It’s up to me to make that big splash, especially come off my car accident. Everybody expected me to take a lesser opponent...I want to fight the top dogs in the division. I finally got the spot where I could fight the big anmes and the guys I’ve be yearning to fight so I’m not gonna go backwards, I’m just gonna go forward and fight the top guys I been wanting to fight.”
