Mikey Garcia looking at top PBC welterweights with lack of good options at 140

Garcia says he’ll continue to campaign at welterweight despite it not being his ideal weight class.

Wil Esco is an assistant editor of Bad Left Hook and has been covering boxing for SB Nation since 2014.

In this video interview with Fight Hub TV, Mikey Garcia shares some of his thoughts on the upcoming clash between Errol Spence and Danny Garcia, what he plans to do next in his career, and why he’s planning to continue on at welterweight despite being more comfortable at 140lbs. Check out what he had to say below...

On Spence-Garcia:

“I think it’s very interesting and it’s gonna answer a lot of questions. One of the biggest questions people have, including myself, is if Errol Spence is 100% after his accident a year ago. If he is 100% then I think Errol will win the fight. I think he will beat Danny by decision, but I think it’ll be a good fight.

“Danny’s no pushover either. Danny’s a world class fighter so I expect it to be a good fight, but I think everybody wants to see how Errol is after the accident and a year layoff.”

On if he’d be willing to face the winner of the fight:

“We have no plans right now so I don’t know. I kinda want to wait to see what happens next year. I’m willing to fight anybody, of course. I’m willing to fight anybody there, whether that be Danny or Shawn Porter or Keith Thurman, if that could lead to a fight with Manny Pacquiao or a rematch with Errol Spence. I’m all for that.

“But I gotta wait and see. I can’t clamor and ask for a specific fight if boxing still has a lot of uncertainties.”

On what weight he feels most comfortable:

“I think 147 is how I’ma be right now. My most comfortable weight, however, would be lighter, 140. But if you follow boxing, and I don’t mean to be a dick but, do you think I’ma get a title fight at 140 when both fighters are with Top Rank, one of them being Jose Ramirez, a friend of mine? Probably not.

“So what am I gonna do at 140? I probably won’t land a title fight. So that’s why I’m campaigning at 147, or that’s why I decided to stay at 147. I think there’s big fights at 147 regardless of a title at stake or not. We just mentioned Danny, Keith, Shawn Porter, possibly Manny or Spence rematch. There’s some big fights.”
