Wanheng Menayothin suffers shock defeat to Petchmanee CP Freshmart

Now-former WBC minimumweight Wanheng Menayothin tasted defeat for the first time in his 13-year professional career earlier today, dropping a unanimous decision to countryman Petchmanee CP Freshmart.

Wanheng (54-1, 18 KO) was fighting for the first time since announcing, and later recanting, his retirement over health issues and frustration with his inability to secure a fight. He’d been slated to make his U.S. debut in April against Marco John Rementizo, only for the coronavirus to intervene. If he does end up making it stateside, it’ll be without that shiny 0.

Petchmanee (35-1, 22 KO), whose only prior bout of note saw him drop a majority decision to Xiong Chiaozhong in 2017, reportedly built an early lead that Wanheng could not overcome, resulting in a trio of 115-113 scores.

At 35, Wanheng is profoundly long in the tooth for the weight, and it remains to be seen whether he’ll be able to reclaim a world title in what time he has left. Still, even if this is the end, it was a hell of a run.
