Round By Round

Daniel Dubois vs Joe Joyce

Round 1: Here we go! Joyce poking his jab out to start. Ring looks small with these two guys. Dubois right hand grazes Joyce’s jaw. Both guys moving their hands from the get-go. Joyce misses a slow right hand. Joyce moves back and avoids a 1-2. Dubois with a jab, he’s staying at some distance so far. Jab from Joyce. Another one. The Joyce jab is working early, one to the body. Dubois coming forward late in the round. Dubois with a hook to the body, Joyce back with another little jab up top. Joyce 10-9

Round 2: Dubois coming out more aggressive to start the second and shakes Joyce a bit on a right hand, Joyce looking to get set but Dubois is putting the pressure on now. Right hand from Dubois may have buzzed Joyce again, just a bit. He’s not wobbling around but he feels those shots, as anyone would. Dubois really setting the tempo in the first minute of the round. Dubois settles a bit and now Joyce getting the jab out again, disrupting rhythm. Right hand from Dubois! He’s looking for openings now, and he’s going at Joyce as they get tangled in close. Joyce backing off a bit, Dubois coming in with a double jab but the right doesn’t get there to follow. Dubois taking advantage of Joyce’s slowness now. Another good right from Dubois. Joyce is just looking to get this round done now; it’s not that he’s badly hurt, but this has not been his round at all. Dubois just misses a right. Dubois 10-9, 19-19

Round 3: Let’s see if Dubois comes out pressing again. He is — good right hands, an uppercut, and now Dubois is throwing big shots! Left hook gets in and shakes Joyce! Joyce is just too slow, but so far he’s holding up, and that means Dubois is expending energy with results remaining to be seen. Joyce working around at distance but not getting much done, Dubois kind of looking to bait him perhaps, get him to lean in and walk onto something. Dubois with a jab now. Joyce flicking his out (I mean as much as a guy this big can “flick”), Dubois has some stink on his. Dubois with another right up top late. Closer round than the second, both got some work done. I’ll take Joyce’s consistent jab, but Dubois landed the more impactful shots. Joyce 10-9, 29-28

Round 4: Joyce’s work isn’t pretty, never is, but he’s “scoring points” with that jab still. Dubois throwing the heavier blows, but not getting home at the moment here. Joyce doubling the jab, starting to move his head some more, might be getting Dubois out of his rhythm. Joyce throws a right but falls into a clinch. Joyce’s jab now really controlling at range. This is exactly what he wants to do, had to have been the exact game plan coming in — jab, control as much as possible early, weather early energy, get it into the later rounds. Some tangling in tight, Ian John Lewis breaks them up. The right that Joyce occasionally lets go is very slow. Dubois marking up on that jab from Joyce, but he lands a right hand late in the round. Joyce’s jab still for me. Joyce 10-9, 39-37

Round 5: Dubois swelling around the left eye coming into this round. He doesn’t look totally confident or settled in the corner, not relaxed at all. Quick break to clean some water in the corner, now underway. Dubois fires a right hand over the top after a jab, clanks off Joyce’s cinder block skull. Both trying to get the jab going, Joyce trying to continue, Dubois trying to establish his more. Dubois starting to look like he’s getting things going a bit, but Joyce staying composed, too. Dubois trying to get his head moving, probably a good idea. Right hand from Dubois, and another. This is a better round for him than the first and last and probably even the third, which was closer than the first and fourth. Dubois moving his hands, looking to the body a bit with the right hand, too. Much better round for Dubois, Joyce didn’t control the tempo this time. Dubois 10-9, Joyce 48-47

Round 6: Not saying it’ll gas him out during the fight to the point it makes The Difference, but Dubois definitely huffing in the corner between rounds. Dubois coming in with the right again, this time misses and falls into a clinch. Good little right inside from Joyce, a counter shot that Dubois definitely felt, you could see it on his face. Dubois winging shots and missing, Joyce again starting to dictate. Little right out of the clinch from Dubois, though. Joyce holds on there and muscles Dubois across the ring to the ropes. Joyce working on the jab from range again. That eye is progressively closing on Dubois, that Joyce jab is no joke. Right hand from Dubois. Dubois with another left to the body as Joyce throws his right. He’s not focused on that but he’s gotten it in some. Very close round and the eye of Dubois is telling the story of Joyce’s jab. Just nick this one to Joyce, but Dubois had an argument. Joyce 10-9, 58-56

Round 7: Dubois catches Joyce with a good shot and shakes him early in the round! But Joyce stays composed, holds on, gets back to range. There’s no doubt Dubois can hurt Joyce, we’ve seen it a few times now. But Joyce has been tough and also smart about avoiding any big storm follow-ups. Dubois putting in a nice effort in the first half of this round. Joyce trying to get back to the jab, moving around away from the right hand of Dubois, which is Dubois’ main weapon of choice, clearly. That eye is about totally shut, there’s no way he can see a lot out of it at this point. Dubois with a good double jab. Right hand from Joyce as Dubois comes in looking for a power shot himself. Dubois going to the body, Joyce covers up. Right hand over the top from Dubois doesn’t quite get there. Joyce looking more comfortable late in this round, like the fresher guy. But Dubois really putting in a good effort and taking this round. Dubois 10-9, Joyce 67-66

Round 8: Joyce looking to keep the jab moving to start this round. Dubois jabbing better now, though, and that’s been a big, big help for him. Never underestimate the jab, we’ve seen that in different ways on both sides of this fight. Short right from Joyce. Triple jab from Joyce. Another jab from Joyce as he also slips a right from Dubois. Dubois getting some warnings from referee Ian John Lewis about straying low; not “hard warnings,” but notes from the side, not disrupting the action yet. Not much disruption in action overall, in fact. Joyce having a better round here, out-working Dubois, perhaps rightly reading that Dubois put a lot of energy into the seventh. Nothing amazing, just working. Dubois with a jab and a right hand. Joyce lets his right go, then pumps the jab some more. Ends a bit chippy, throwing to the bell. I liked Joyce’s jab and work rate clearly. Joyce 10-9, 77-75

Round 9: Joyce has been very consistent with his approach, and to be fair, Dubois hasn’t really forced him to go to a Plan B. Plan A hasn’t been a total home run, Joyce definitely isn’t way up here, but it’s worked to the point that you wouldn’t abandon it, and he hasn’t. It’s been a lot of clever execution from Joyce. Pace slowing this round, but Dubois not doing much with Joyce’s work rate dropping a bit. 1-2 from Joyce. Joyce finishes the round strong and lands some good shots. Joyce looking pretty confident in there right now. Joyce 10-9, 87-84

Round 10: Dubois looking for the right hand early again. Dubois paws at his eye after a jab AND DOWN GOES DUBOIS! HE’S TAKEN THE FULL 10 COUNT! JOE JOYCE WITH THE KNOCKOUT! Joyce KO-10
