Devin Haney: Teofimo Lopez knows he’s not undisputed without fighting me

Haney holds the WBC’s world title at lightweight, and says Lopez knows in the back of his head he can’t be undisputed without it.

Wil Esco is an assistant editor of Bad Left Hook and has been covering boxing for SB Nation since 2014.

During a virtual media roundtable with WBC lightweight world champion Devin Haney, he takes questions from reporters and talks a little about his thoughts about potentially facing unified champion Teofimo Lopez. Check out some excerpts below...

Haney on if he would take fight against Teofimo Lopez for the WBC’s Franchise title if possible:

“Well, I’m not interested in winning a franchise title. That’s not something that I really want to do. But I am willing to fight for undisputed, all the belts, against Teofimo.”

On how many fights he thinks he has left at 135:

“Honestly, my weight has been great for this fight. Honestly, and I really say this from the bottom of my heart, if I had weight problems I would tell you. You know, it’s been hard but this weight cut has been unbelievable. I think it was just from being a year off during quarantine and giving my body time to rest and recover. I feel great at 135 right now, there’s so many big fights to be made.

Who knows what the future holds. Of course I’m looking forward to going to 140 eventually but it’s so many big fights to be made at 135. I’m willing to stay here for a little bit longer.”

On if he’s gotten any indication from the WBC about how they’ll handle the title situation between Lopez and himself:

“At the end of the day [Teofimo] kept saying he was willing to fight me because he knows that he gains from fighting me. It’s something that he knows he doesn’t feel right without fighting me for the real undisputed everything — all the belts. He knows that he’s not undisputed without fighting me.”
