Daniel Dubois may need surgery, facing five month layoff

Dubois saw a specialist yesterday, but there remained too much swelling for proper analysis

The Sun, a horrid rag whose online version eliminates that print version’s ideal usage as toilet paper, reports that the gruesome eye injuries Daniel Dubois suffered in Saturday’s loss to Joe Joyce could keep him out of action for nearly half a year or more. It’s presently unclear whether he’ll require surgery, as there remained too much swelling for a proper assessment when he saw a specialist yesterday.

Dubois (15-1, 14 KO) entered Saturday’s fight as a sizable favorite and kept it competitive for a while, but Joyce’s (12-0, 11 KO) constant onslaught of jabs steadily closed “Dynamite’s” eye, forcing the younger man to take a knee and wait out the 10-count in the 10th. He reportedly sports a broken orbital and retinal bleed.

A number of his countrymen, including Ricky Hatton, Carl Frampton, Johnny Nelson, and Chris Eubank Jr have criticized Dubois for “quitting.” You’d think after seeing so many other British fighters hang up the gloves with eye troubles, they’d have a bit of empathy, but nope. Dubois made the right call and I hope we (and he) can see him back in action before too long.
