Mario Barrios, who holds the WBA’s secondary “world” title at 140 pounds, is like most in the boxing world who will have their eyes firmly on Errol Spence Jr vs Danny Garcia this Saturday night.
But Barrios is planning to do a little scouting, too, as he figures his time at 140 is growing short, and a move to welterweight is in his pretty near future.
“Everyone knows I’ll be moving up to welterweight at some point,” said Barrios. “I feel I still have a few more fights at (140), but it’s getting harder to make the weight at this stage in my career. When I do move up to 147, I want to fight all the big names, that includes Spence and Garcia. I know a fight with either of them will be huge in every aspect, in addition to every other big name at welterweight.”

Barrios (26-0, 17 KO) actually turned pro at 122 pounds back in 2013 when he was 18 years old, but the San Antonio native has just kept growing. Standing 5’11”, he was a prospect of note at 130 before making the jump to 140 in 2017.
In his last fight, Barrios stopped Ryan Karl in the sixth round on the Davis-Santa Cruz card in Barrios’ hometown.
As for Spence-Garcia, Barrios figures it will be a top-notch fight.
“This is going to be a fight where both Spence and Garcia are going to give the fans an all-out war,” he said. “Garcia is never in a boring fight and we know he’s going to bring it. Spence is exciting in every way and they will both be leaving it in the ring.”
Now 25, Barrios has been recently linked to a possible fight with former titleholder Regis Prograis, but it’s just talk at this point. Prograis also fought on the Davis-Santa Cruz bill, knocking out Juan Heraldez in three.
