Mike Coppinger reports that Showtime is putting together a February card headlined by Adrien Broner, with an already agreed-upon heavyweight clash between Otto Wallin and Dominic Breazeale serving as “chief support.”
While the fight presently lacks a specific date, there’s only one Saturday that month that won’t result in conflict: the 6th. The 13th features Joe Smith Jr. vs. Maxim Vlasov on ESPN and JoJo Diaz vs. Shavkat Rakhimov on DAZN, the 20th has Floyd Mayweather vs. Logan Paul on PPV and Miguel Berchelt vs. Oscar Valdez on ESPN, and the 27th will presumably feature Canelo Alvarez vs. Avni Yildirim.
Broner (33-4-1, 24 KO) hasn’t fought since losing to Manny Pacquiao in January of last year and hasn’t won since narrowly edging out Adrian Granados in February of 2017. He’s spent much of the intervening time self-destructing. He was ordered to pay $830,000 to a woman he allegedly pinned down and forcibly kissed, got arrested for trespassing at the Wilder-Fury 2 weigh-ins, spent a week in jail after violating his probation, then spent some more time in jail due to not paying the ordered amount.
For what it’s worth, Broner claims he’s been sober for a month and has dropped 30 pounds. He hasn’t exactly earned the benefit of the doubt, though.
Wallin (21-1, 14 KO) vs. Breazeale (20-2, 18 KO) is a fun little tussle. Wallin memorably gave Tyson Fury a tough out last year and looked solid in his injury TKO over Travis Kauffman this past August. Breazeale, meanwhile, hasn’t fought since ending up on the wrong end of Bad Left Hook’s 2019 Knockout of the Year against Deontay Wilder.
