Jose Ramirez’s mandatory title defense against Viktor Postol, originally scheduled for the first of this month before coronavirus concerns forced its cancellation, won’t be rebooked as swiftly as one might like. Mike Coppinger reports that the fight is now targeted for May 9th in Fresno, California, which has hosted three of the unified super lightweight champion’s last five fights.
It sucks that we’ll have to wait another three months for a very solid fight, especially since Jack Catterall’s promised crack at Ramirez’s (25-0, 17 KO) WBO belt could further delay the full unification Josh Taylor’s recent signing with Top Rank seemed to promise. At least the location makes a hell of a lot more sense; this would be Ramirez’s ninth time fighting in Fresno. Plus, I imagine the undercard will be a hell of a lot better than the original.
Top Rank could still whip up an Esquiva Falcao co-feature, of course. It’d just be harder to justify.
