Top lightweight prospect Ryan Garcia made it 20-0 tonight, waxing Francisco Fonseca in the first round of their DAZN main event in Anaheim, California.
Garcia (20-0, 17 KO) shook Fonseca (25-3-2, 19 KO) on a left hook, then put him down and out with another one moments later, and that’s pretty much the entire description of the fight, for all it really matters.
The 21-year-old Garcia has said repeatedly in the lead-up to this fight that he wants something bigger next. The plan may be to fight Jorge Linares in July in Los Angeles, and Linares did his part in tonight’s co-feature. Gervonta “Tank” Davis has also been mentioned, and WBC champion-in-recess Devin Haney got into the ring to make sure everyone doesn’t forget him, too.
Here’s Garcia’s knockout of Fonseca, in case you missed it:
“It was a good performance,” Garcia said with a smile. “It didn’t last too long. I watched video of Sugar Ray Robinson coming into this fight. He did a little fake, and he caught them with a left hook. I was planning for it to go a little longer, I’m not gonna lie. But respect to Fonseca, they were great people. They respected me the whole time.
“I saw the left hook, it was there. I just needed to let him commit to a shot. So I let him get comfortable, and then I caught him with the shot.”
Garcia again insists he’s ready for the top names at 135, and we know his fans are ready for him in bigger fights, too.
“I’m ready for everybody now. I’m ready. I feel comfortable. I’ve been in there with all the good sparring. I’m ready for everybody, let’s go!”
No specific plans were named in-ring, but the options are there.
