The February 29th Mikey Garcia vs Jessie Vargas card in Frisco, Texas has another fight added to the undercard, this one another scheduled 10-rounder featuring a former titleholder. ESPN cites sources which indicate that Murat Gassiev (26-1, 19 KOs) has officially been added to the bill in a fight against Jerry Forrest (26-3, 20 KOs) in a heavyweight contest.
Gassiev is most recently coming off a unanimous decision loss to Oleksandr Usyk in the World Boxing Super Series tournament final last July. Gassiev gave a good account of himself in that outing, but has been out of action since and will be shaking the rust off against Forrest.
Forrest, despite his decent looking record, has basically seldom fought anyone worth a damn, as evidenced by his last opponent who sported a haughty 3-25-1 record. So in terms of matchmaking this is essentially on par with Joseph Parker vs Shawndell Winters, which has also been scheduled for this card.
All in all, I can’t say this is shaping up to be a very eventful night of boxing.
