Tonight’s DAZN card from Frisco, Texas was full of highlight-worthy performances, including a pair of terrific title fights, a strong main event, and a return win for a former heavyweight titleholder.
In the main event, we saw Mikey Garcia outpoint Jessie Vargas over 12 hard-fought rounds, going to 1-1 at welterweight and confirming his intent to stay at 147 and seek a possible fight with Manny Pacquiao, or maybe even a rematch with Errol Spence Jr, which would probably be a tough sell for most fans who saw their first fight about a year ago. Garcia was definitely better in this fight than he was against Spence, and it wasn’t just down to Vargas being no Spence, either. (But still, Vargas is no Spence.)
In the co-feature, Roman “Chocolatito” Gonzalez returned for real, taking the WBA junior bantamweight title from Kal Yafai via ninth round knockout. Julio Cesar Martinez retained his WBC flyweight title over Jay Harris in a gritty 12-round battle. And former heavyweight titlist Joseph Parker ran over a game but overmatched Shawndell Winters in the opener.
