Yeah, it’s not a “could” anymore.
Fresh off of California limiting public gatherings to a maximum of 250 people, the state’s athletic commission (CSAC) “has suspended all combat sporting events for the month of March.” This notably cancels next week’s Thursday Night Fights card in Hollywood, headlined by Joet Gonzalez vs. Chris Avalos, and GBP’s March 28th show in Inglewood headlined by Vergil Ortiz Jr. vs. Samuel Vargas.
Trust me, I’ve been trying to find good things to report today. I did not wake up with the intention of telling spending all day bearing bad news.
Major sporting events are definitely going to be a rarity in the coming months as various countries struggle to deal with what is now officially a pandemic. It’s looking like the best we can hope for is that the most anticipated fights will take place behind closed doors. In the meantime, stay safe, keep washing your hands, and maybe consider giving Castlevania on Netflix a watch with your newfound free time.
