Briedis vs Dorticos postponed until May 16 due to coronavirus

As feared but anticipated, the World Boxing Super Series cruiserweight final won’t go on next Saturday.

For the last couple of days following Latvia banning public gatherings over 250 people, we’ve been expecting a postponement for the March 21 fight in Riga between Mairis Briedis and Yuniel Dorticos, and now it’s official: the fight is off and has been rescheduled for May 16.

Briedis (26-1, 19 KO) and Dorticos (24-1, 22 KO) will be fighting for the Ali Trophy in the World Boxing Super Series tournament final, as well as Dorticos’ IBF cruiserweight title.

To get to this fight, Briedis has scored two controversial wins over Noel Mikaelian and Krzysztof Glowacki, while Cuba’s Briedis won a decision over Mateusz Masternak and violently knocked out Andrew Tabiti in the semifinal round.

The good news is we do have a rescheduled date already and the hope is that everything will be back to normal well ahead of May 16. That’s no guarantee, of course, but it’s on the books already and the long-delayed fight hopefully has jumped through its final hoop.
