Miguel Berchelt claims Oscar Valdez fight is ‘practically done,’ will be ‘like Marquez-Barrera’

Long-reigning WBC super featherweight champion Miguel Berchelt took a page from sanctioning body president Mauricio Sulaiman’s book and used a streaming service to give an update on his situation. “El Alacran” says that he is “just waiting for a date from the WBC” for his title defense against former featherweight Oscar Valdez, which he claims will be like the legendary 2007 clash between Juan Manuel Marquez and Marco Antonio Barrera.

It’s not an inaccurate comparison; Barrera was making his fifth WBC super featherweight title defense against former interim WBO featherweight champ Marquez. Berchelt (37-1, 33 KO) will be making his seventh WBC super featherweight defense against former world WBO champ Valdez (27-0, 21 KO), who vacated his belt last year while citing an inability to make 126 pounds.

Judging by how brawl-happy these two are, a fight between them almost certainly has the potential for Marquez-Barrera level entertainment.

Berchelt also sees this matchup as a clash between his trainer, Alfredo Caballero, and Valdez’s, 2019 Trainer of the Year Eddy Reynoso. While acknowledging that Reynoso has done a “great job” with the likes of Canelo, Valdez, Ryan Garcia, and Julio Cesar Martinez, he wants this fight to “confirm” that Caballero is the stronger of the two.
