With the word spreading that Canelo Alvarez will in fact be taking on Billy Joe Saunders as his May 2nd opponent, Callum Smith tells Sky Sports that he doesn’t believe Canelo’s team were ever really interested in a fight with him, which is why he says they offered him a low ball offer that he originally rejected.

“They made me an offer which I believe was too low. I said no. Billy Joe said no to the same offer. I thought we’d start negotiating and we’d have some back-and-forth. But that was it. He made one offer then went to social media saying that I didn’t want the fight. But I don’t think they ever really wanted me anyway. They were just covering their own backs.”

Smith would continue by saying that the initial offer that Golden Boy sent him was the only one he would ever receive, and that he’s disappointed he won’t get the chance to fight Canelo while still wishing Saunders the best of luck.

Now Smith is certainly on the market for his next fight, saying he wants a big one. Well, while he’s been mentioning his interest in fighting Kell Brook, who campaigns well below him, IBF titleholder Caleb Plant says his team has just recently sent Smith an offer for a title unification. That fight would sit much better with me, personally.
