As expected, Mairis Briedis and Yuniel Dorticos will not be squaring off in Riga on May 16th. The World Boxing Super Series released a statement today that “[u]nder the current circumstances, a feasible date for the WBSS cruiserweight final between Mairis Briedis and Yuniel Dorticos is out of reach.”
Already beset by delays that left it unbooked even after the bantamweight and super lightweight finals took place, Briedis (26-1, 19 KO) and Dorticos (24-1, 22 KO) finally got the green light in January to duke it out on March 21st. Last month saw it delayed until May 16th due to Latvia banning large public gatherings over coronavirus concerns, and now it looks as though it will be more than a year since their semifinal bouts before these two finally lock horns.
According to the press release, “the Latvian government extended the state of emergency and the containment measures until at least 12 May 2020.” Maybe Florida is available?
