Welterweight Maurice Lee (12-1-2, 5 KOs) has surfaced to low-key announce that he’s in the midst of negotiating a fight against unified titleholder Errol Spence (26-0, 21 KOs). Now after Spence’s scary car wreck it was probably safe to assume he wasn’t going to jump right back into the deep end, so a tune-up fight against someone like Lee seems pretty reasonable. Lee, of course, doesn’t view himself as a tune-up though.
“It’s like God is so good. I got some great news,” Lee said. “Errol Spence, you gonna get exactly what you asked for, n***a. I’m about to dog you, like you stole something, you bitch ass n***a. Let me stay Christian with it though because I got that street in me, I come from the streets, but I trust Jesus.
“I just got some great news, God is working. You know how Adrien Broner fought Ashley Theophane — Errol Spence now bout to fight Maurice ‘Victorious’ Lee and get his ass whooped.”
Lee, 28, was once a prospect working under the guidance of Joe Goossen several years back. That situation never really panned out though and Lee would eventually make his way to Las Vegas where he’s been under the Mayweather Promotions banner.
At his age it’s safe to say that Lee never quite grew to the level he might’ve expected, but if a fight with Spence comes off it would be a great opportunity for him. Unfortunately there’s a pretty obvious talent discrepancy between the Lee and Spence, and it’s hard for me to see Lee getting anything other than mowed over unless Spence is just not the same guy anymore. We’ll see.
