Sports Medicine Research and Testing Laboratory (SMRTL), a WADA certified lab in Salt Lake City, has just announced that they have been certified to perform coronavirus testing, which is obviously expected to be a big part of getting sports going again.
ESPN reports that lab president Dr. Daniel Eichner is currently working with both the local state athletic commissions in both California and Nevada to create protocols for testing at future events. That’s relevant to boxing because those two states often host high profile cards on a regular basis. Eichner did emphasize, however, that a majority of his lab’s testing will be dedicated to front line workers and not specifically for sports.
NSAC commissioner Bob Bennett says that before they officially re-open sporting events in Nevada, they will follow the data and science as they navigate their path forward, with interested parties keeping a close eye on how the UFC was able to run a closed-door event in Jacksonville, Florida that past Saturday, with a couple more events on the way this week.
