With promoters looking to resume the boxing schedule for the remainder of the year and beyond, Top Rank’s Bob Arum says that he’s’ looking to start announcing some of his upcoming cards next week, which he assures will be of good quality.
“It’ll be all fighters who have either appeared on the main event or in the semi-main event on past shows televised on ESPN or streamed on ESPN+. So they’ll be high-caliber shows.”
Arum would temper expectations a bit, saying that we shouldn’t expect to hear an immediate announcement on Vasiliy Lomachenko vs Teofimo Lopez or anything like that, but that once travel restrictions begin to loosen up he’ll start to solidify those kind of matches as well.
In the meanwhile, Top Rank fighters such as junior lightweight titleholder Jamel Herring — who was supposed to be taking on Carl Frampton — is now expected to have a stay-busy fight as a title defense.
“Herring will probably fight somebody else, defend his 130-pound championship. In other words, it’s not ideal, but we’re going to be doing the best we possibly can.”
Arum finally mentions that he’s also looking into foreign venues that could potentially host some of the biggest fights he needs to book, such as Tyson Fury vs Deontay Wilder III, specifically mentioning Macao by saying they now have a track record for putting on successful events there.
