The government of the Dominican Republic have canceled a scheduled May 30 boxing card in Santo Domingo, which was to air on ESPN Deportes featuring a junior bantamweight main event between Norbelto Jimenez and Eliezer Aquino.
A release was issued and Sports Minister Danilo Diaz said the event “was not in line with the health protocol the Dominican government had implemented related to the coronavirus pandemic.”
Jimenez (29-9-5, 16 KO) is best-known for a 2019 title shot against then-WBA 115-pound titlist Kal Yafai, losing in Providence via wide 12-round decision. He most recently fought on Mar. 6 in Dubai, going to a 10-round draw with Aliu Bamidele Lasisi.
Aquino (21-4-1, 14 KO) had most recently fought in November, winning a club fight in Santo Domingo, about six weeks after losing a 10-round decision to prospect Luis Reynaldo Nunez in Nagua.
The show, which was to feature six fights in all, was going to take place with no fans in attendance.
