Both Poland and Germany hosted cards earlier today, and neither main event produced surprise. Mariusz Wach took a surprisingly watchable unanimous decision over Kevin Johnson in the former, while middleweight contender Jack Culcay cruised past Howard Cospolite in the former.
Despite fighting in the smallest ring I’ve ever seen, the towering Wach (36-6, 19 KO) consistently kept Johnson (34-17-1, 18 KO) on the end of his busy jab, occasionally following up with a long right or combinations of arm punches. In a break from tradition, “Kingpin” actually looked like he was trying at points, occasionally doing good bodywork and looking to take the Polish giant’s head off with sporadic overhand rights. I don’t know if quarantine has destroyed my frame of reference, but it was actually somewhat entertaining and competitive.
Definitely not pay-per-view worthy, though.
The judges had Wach winning by a landslide, which is to be expected in a Polish event with Wach’s name written on the ring apron, but the 40-year-old “Viking” had to work for it.
Over in Berlin, Culcay (27-4, 13 KO) made it 3-0 since losing an eliminator to Sergiy Derevyanchenko last year. France’s Cospolite (18-7-3, 6 KO) had lost to practically every notable figure he’d faced and that didn’t change, though ESPN Deportes has some effusive praise for his efforts.
Culcay remains in the IBF and WBO top 10s.
