Featherweight Oscar Negrete (19-2-2, 7 KOs) has officially been removed from a scheduled June 25th fight against Jason Moloney (20-1, 17 KOs). Multiple sources have informed ESPN that Negrete, 32, suffered a detached retina leading into the fight, forcing him to be pulled from the card.

The Top Rank card will now continue on as scheduled, but with Leonardo Baez (18-2, 9 KOs) stepping in to take Negrete’s place. Speaking on the replacement opponent for Moloney, Carl Moretti says:

“Baez is a solid guy. I have no doubt it will be an entertaining fight as well. He’s been ready.”

Baez, 24, has most recently taken a unanimous decision over Moises Flores while Negrete had been coming off a decision win over Alberto Ezequiel Melian in February (following a split draw with Joshua Franco last year). Hopefully this won’t prove to be a career-ender for Negrete, but detached retinas are serious injuries in this line of work.
