“I came a long way, you know? This chubby kid coming from a small town. But all the people that are betting on me, they’re gonna make a lot, a lot of money if we pull it off, you know?”
Last June, Andy Ruiz Jr sent a seismic shock throughout the entire sports world, becoming the biggest story out there for a couple of weeks after upsetting Anthony Joshua to win the WBA, IBF, and WBO heavyweight titles at Madison Square Garden.
You all know the story of the fight by now, of course. If you don’t, it’s been documented many times now, and DAZN have offered up yet another look at the fight on its one-year anniversary. If you’ve never seen the fight, you can watch it in full right here.
As usual, the production here is great, tells the story of the fight incredibly well, plus you get to see some of the aftermath, when Andy Ruiz Jr was briefly a mainstream sports name. That would all come back to haunt him, in a way, as he lost focus ahead of the December rematch and was soundly defeated by Joshua in Saudi Arabia.
But if he never has anything else, Andy Ruiz Jr had that one night in New York, and it will be a story told many, many more times.
