Adan Gonzales: Robeisy Ramirez is nothing special

Robeisy Ramirez (3-1, 3 KOs) was a highly touted prospect coming into the professional ranks with Top Rank, especially considering he was a two-time Olympic gold medalist. But things didn’t go exactly as planned for Ramirez’s pro debut, as he was dropped and outpointed by Adan Gonzales who was brought in to lose. Top Rank would go on to bring Ramirez back with a few more soft touches, and now that Ramirez has won three straight fights by stoppage he’s been lined up for a July 2nd rematch against Gonzales (5-2-2, 2 KOs).

Gonzales tells ESPN that he was well aware that Top Rank viewed him as a pushover for the Olympic champion, and he thinks they’re still viewing him the same way as they only just offered him the rematch with Ramirez two weeks ago — obviously on short notice.

“I feel like they’re trying to catch me off-guard, but that’s cool. They have to use every tactic they can to protect their little baby. This time it’s different. I know what it is. He ain’t nothing special, at all.”

Ramirez will clearly be coming into this fight with a point to prove — that the first fight was a fluke — but with Gonzales having wiped the sheen off Ramirez’s polished image, he’s coming into this fight full of confidence.

“I know what’s going to change. He’s going to come with more pressure, he’s going to try and prove a point. He can’t prove that point with me. I’m not that person to prove that point with. I’m not going to change anything. I’m going to do everything the same, just like I did the last time.”

Repeat or revenge will be the question of the night on Thursday. Can Gonzales pull it off again?
