Robert Garcia: Vergil Ortiz Jr will be ready for anybody in a year or two

Garcia shares some thoughts on the progression of the prized welterweight prospect.

During this Instagram Live session with trainer Robert Garcia, he shares some brief footage of Vergil Ortiz putting in some sparring work in the gym and then answers some fan questions about some big fights they’d like to see him in. Check out some excerpts from the video below...

“Vergil versus Broner, I would love that but, you know, that’s between promoters and managers. I really don’t know if that’s even possible right now with promoters not being able to do fights together.

“Vergil versus Spence would also be a great fight. A few fights from now, a year, two years from now, he’s gonna be ready for anybody. Don’t forget Virgil just turned 22 so he’s very young and I don’t want to rush him either.”

Ortiz (15-0, 15 KOs), who is coming off stoppage win over Brad Solomon last December, has been getting a lot of high praise from his handlers and Golden Boy promoter, mentioned as being the next big thing in the welterweight division. Let’s see how all that hype translates as Ortiz develops and steps up his quality of opposition.
