I joked about Top Rank being cursed, but I’m starting to think it might be real. Following in the heels of Jamel Herring vs. Jonathan Oquendo, Jose Zepeda vs. Ivan Baranchyk, Jarrell Miller vs. Jerry Forrest, and Eleider Alvarez vs. Joe Smith Jr., tomorrow’s ESPN main event between Miguel Marriaga and Mark John Yap is off after Yap missed weight by nearly nine pounds.
The show will go on with Felix Verdejo vs. Will Madera in the headlining spot.
Yap (30-15, 15 KO) fought at bantamweight as recently as a 2018 final eliminator against Takuma Inoue. Despite this, he crushed the scales at 136.7 pounds for a 128-pound catchweight bout with Marriaga (29-3, 25 KO), who sees his second fight of the year fall through after COVID canceled his title shot against Shakur Stevenson at the last minute.
The only Top Rank July main event to survive unscathed to this point is next Tuesday’s match between Oscar Valdez and Jayson Velez. I wouldn’t get too excited for that one.
