Joe Gallagher says Callum Smith still on the table for Canelo Alvarez

Despite the recent reports that Jason Quigley has received an offer to face Canelo Alvarez this September, Callum Smith’s trainer, Joe Gallagher, says the door isn’t closed yet on his fighter to get the opportunity.

It’s long been known that Smith wants a fight against the Mexican superstar, but he’s been reluctant to make the financial concessions that are probably needed to make it happen, and Gallagher — while hopeful — understands that might ultimately stand in the way.

“Callum Smith’s name is still in the frame and we’ll just have to wait and see. I understand there’s an amount of money. I understand there’s no tickets, I understand there’s no fanbase. I understand there’s no money to be made from the promotion. For a promoter it’s very hard, so I do understand.”

In the meantime Gallagher continues by saying that Smith is just steadily putting in the work so he’s prepared for his next outing.

“Callum Smith has thrown his name in the hat and he’s ready to go. From what I’m hearing, Canelo wants Callum. If it doesn’t happen, we don’t know, maybe it isn’t going to generate the money that the promoters would like to generate.”

For now we’ll just have to wait and see what Golden Boy dials up for Canelo as making any significant fights in this current pandemic (and therefore without crowds) is going to be an ongoing issue for every promoter across the board.
