Dillian Whyte still hasn’t gotten his shot at the WBC world heavyweight title, but he’ll get a chance to grab another WBC belt (of which there are many) when he takes on Alexander Povetkin on August 22nd to end Eddie Hearn’s ‘Fight Camp.’ WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman formally announced that his organization will allow Whyte and Povetkin to compete for their ‘Diamond’ belt.
“I’m very excited about it. I believe that this fight has all the merits for the WBC to award the prestigious ‘Diamond’ belt. Both are sensational fighters. Povetkin and Whyte are former ‘Silver’ champions of the WBC. They have been training in extreme circumstances and they are very professional.”
No doubt that this title probably won’t be enough to satiate Whyte in his pursuit of a full world title, but maybe this is just a nice consolation prize for those who might want to stock up the trophy case.
Should Whyte take the win here, he’ll be due for a shot at the world title currently held by Tyson Fury by February 2021.
