Mike Coppinger reports that WBA “world” super welterweight champion Erislandy Lara will return after nearly a year on the sidelines when he headlines an Aug. 29 PBC on FOX show in Los Angeles.
Lara (26-3-3, 15 KO) followed up his 2018 loss to Jarrett Hurd in a Fight of the Year candidate with a split draw against Brian Castano. Then came a far easier assignment in Ramon Alvarez, whom the Cuban veteran smoked in two for his first official win since 2017. This was supposedly meant to set up a clash with Michel Soro, but nothing ever came of it and the ongoing pandemic almost certainly took that off the table.
It’s unclear at the moment whom Lara will fight, though the fact that we’re less than four weeks from fight night and still require TBA’s services suggests that it won’t be anyone of note. While Israil Madrimov earned a mandatory crack at either Lara or Jeison Rosario and has stated his desire to face the 37-year-old “American Dream,” he’s currently set to face Eric Walker a week from Saturday.
My guess is that Lara ends up fighting a gimme in order to set up a clash with Madrimov later this year. You all got anyone in mind?
