With WBC junior lightweight titleholder Terri Harper ready to defend her title on Friday against Natasha Jonas, Eddie Hearn and Matchroom Boxing have also laid in a big block for Harper’s immediate future.
Matchroom have signed WBO titlist Ewa Brodnicka of Poland, which rather easily sets up a unification bout between Harper and Brodnicka, should Harper prove successful on Friday and retain her title.
Hearn has mentioned this in the past as a fight he wanted to make, and bringing the 36-year-old Brodnicka (19-0, 2 KO) fully on board with Matchroom is the easiest way to make sure that happens. Hearn, of course, says it sets up Brodnicka against the winner of Harper-Jonas, but I don’t think it’s ridiculous to suggest that the promoter wants the young rising star to win and keep rising, rather than the 36-year-old Jonas, with nothing against Jonas.
“I’m delighted to team up with Eddie Hearn and Matchroom Boxing,” said Brodnicka. “Women’s boxing is on fire right now and I want to be in all the big fights starting with the unification match up between the winner of Harper and Jonas. I’m excited for the future and can’t wait for my return to the ring.”
Brodnicka managed to get a fight in this year before the pandemic shut boxing down across the globe, defending her belt via 10-round decision win over Djemilla Gontaruk on Mar. 7 in Poland. To date, she has never fought outside of her home country, but that will be changing.
