In this conversation with Fight Hub TV, Errol Spence’s trainer Derrick James chats it up about Spence’s return to the ring after his scary car accident, going against Danny Garcia in his next outing. James discusses how Spence has been looking in training and says that we’ll soon see Spence back to form. Check out some excerpts below...
James on how Spence is doing:
“He’s doing great, man. He’s fit, he’s ready to go. He’s in shape, he’s ready to put the work in.”
On what phase of training camp they’re currently in:
“We haven’t started strategizing, just kind of talking. I mean just like talking to him more like from a mental perspective.
“We’ll get to see him be great again, and he’ll defend his belt and move onto, you know, another belt, hopefully.”
On those wondering about Spence’s condition post-accident:
“The thing about it is it’s the doubt that the people have, you know, that’s another motivation factor. People think that he won’t be the same and he can’t do this or he can’t do that...”
On what Spence’s first day back at the gym was like after the car wreck:
“It was good to have him back, right. But then I just kept looking at him, like when we were working the mitts and all that...You’re just like ‘he’s here,’ you know what I mean, and you’re just happy to see him. Happy to see him do what he knows and feels like he does best...I’m describing it but I cannot describe the feeling because I just kept looking at him, because in normal moments I’m looking for his reaction, not at him.
“When you have a guy that you care about, you love, you know, you happy to them. You want the best for them in any way. And so I was just happy to see a guy I love back in the ring.”
On Spence taking on Danny Garcia without a tune-up fight:
“Our sparring is real sparring, so it’s like fight simulator. It’s not pity-pat, it’s real. I think Danny’s a good guy, a good fighter...so when you look at it you gotta be motivated to fight guys. Most guys look bad or get beat because they’re not inspired or motivated. I think when you want to be great and you bring in the right sparring partners, the right guys, guys that’s gonna get you motivated and get that out of you — it’s like Floyd said, that Errol made him get on his game. So we’re bringing in guys that’s gonna make him get on his game.
“And you get tested in the gym so that in a fight —it’s a test too — but you’ve seen that you already got the answers to all the questions that’s on the test.”
