Matchroom Boxing are looking to get moving on Katie Taylor’s next fight and the rematch between Jessica McCaskill and Cecilia Braekhus, with Eddie Hearn putting both together, though he’s got no set opponent for Taylor.
“You will see her out at the end of April. She wants challenges, the big fights. Natasha Jonas, we have talked about. I love that fight. We are doing the Jessica McCaskill vs Cecilia Braekhus rematch in early March and I think you will see Katie fight the winner in the summer.”
Taylor (17-0, 6 KO) is the undisputed lightweight champion and arguably the top women’s boxer in the sport. She last fought on Nov. 14, outclassing a way over-matched Miriam Gutierrez.
Jonas (9-1-1, 7 KO) is a former Olympian and overall amateur standout who put in a great effort last August in a draw with 130-pound titlist Terri Harper.
As for the rematch between undisputed welterweight champ McCaskill (9-2, 3 KO) and Braekhus (36-1, 9 KO), that doesn’t have an official date yet, but it probably happens in the U.S. when Hearn can secure enough other talent to put the show on somewhere. Last time out they headlined outdoors in Tulsa, with McCaskill winning a disputed majority decision in a good fight. It appeared briefly that Braekhus, 39, was going to retire, but she changed her mind pretty quickly and decided to take the rematch with the 36-year-old McCaskill.
Taylor fighting the McCaskill-Braekhus winner has been floated a bunch and would make sense. Most likely it’d take place at a catchweight, say 142 pounds, which is fine. Taylor did already fight McCaskill back in Dec. 2017, winning a clear decision, but McCaskill has gotten a little better and Taylor has shown some flaws and vulnerability since then.
