As Caleb Truax readies himself for this weekend’s title fight against reigning champion Caleb Plant this weekend, Truax is plenty aware that the general public doesn’t have high hopes for his chances.
That’s actually a familiar role for Truax, who tells RingTV that he’s comfortable in that role as he hopes to turn in a major upset. In fact, Truax fully admits that Plants deserves to be the solid favorite in this fight, but is not letting that adversely affect his mindset.
“I embrace that role. It motivates me to prove everyone wrong. I see people online saying I don’t deserve the fight and I’m just another cherry pick for [Plant]. But I feel like I’m the best fighter he’s faced by far and I think I offer something that no other fighter that he has – except for [Jose] Uzcategui – offered to him in being a former world champion and being experienced and having fought the much better fighters than he has. So I feel really good about the matchup.”
Truax continues by saying that he believes he’s being completely overlooked by Caleb Plant, who has spent a lot of time recently discussing a future fight against Canelo Alvarez. Plant says he’s focused on this fight against Traux, but that’s not the sense Truax has, who likens Plant’s position to that of James DeGale who he was able to shock to take a world title in 2017.
At age 37, Truax is most recently coming off a majority decision win over David Basajjamivule a full year ago, while Plant, 28, last stopped Vincent Feigenbutz last February. If Truax has anything left to offer at the world level, he’s going to have to bring it all to bear for Saturday night’s main event.
