Bad Left Hook Boxing Rankings (October 18, 2021): Emanuel Navarrete, Mikey Garcia, Mairis Briedis, more

Emanuel Navarrete is now No. 1 at featherweight, a brutal weekend for Mikey Garcia, and more in this week’s update.

Rankings go up on Mondays.

Ranked fights this week:

  • Junior Lightweight: (3) Jamel Herring vs (5) Shakur Stevenson, Oct. 23

Upcoming Fights: (6) Dillian Whyte vs (10) Otto Wallin, Oct. 30 ... (8) Joseph Parker vs Derek Chisora, Dec. 18

Notes: Mairis Briedis took care of business very easily against Artur Mann on Saturday, which was as expected. It was never a good fight. The target is now Lawrence Okolie, which is the fight to make at cruiserweight for various reasons, the biggest being that it’s by far the best money fight in the division. Hopefully Eddie Hearn and the Sauerlands can get it done. They should be able to, there’s really no reason for it to not happen.

Upcoming Fights: TBA

Upcoming Fights: (8) Maxim Vlasov vs TBA, Nov. 27 ... (1) Artur Beterbiev vs (5) Marcus Browne, Dec. 17 ... (4) Joe Smith Jr vs Umar Salamov, TBA

Upcoming Fights: (1) Canelo Alvarez vs (2) Caleb Plant, Nov. 6 ... (9) Zach Parker vs TBA, Nov. 6 ... (3) David Benavidez vs Jose Uzcategui, Nov. 13

Notes: Chris Eubank Jr won his mismatch on Saturday, proving nothing new but he did get active, and now Sky’s plan is to match him against Liam Williams, possibly in December. I think that’s a hell of a good fight, both have particular strengths and weaknesses and might match up really nicely for entertainment.

Upcoming Fights: (8) Janibek Alimkhanuly vs Hassan N’Dam, Nov. 5 ... (7) Jaime Munguia vs Gabriel Rosado, Nov. 13 ... (3) Demetrius Andrade vs Jason Quigley, Nov. 19 ... (1) Gennadiy Golovkin vs (5) Ryota Murata, Dec. 28

Upcoming Fights: (6) Tim Tszyu vs Takeshi Inoue, Nov. 17 ... (8) Michel Soro vs (9) Israil Madrimov, TBA

Notes: Saturday was a real disaster for Mikey Garcia, who was flat out-boxed by Sandor Martin, a European-level junior welterweight. Martin didn’t suddenly become a top 10 welterweight, and you’ll see below I also don’t think he’s a top 10 junior welterweight, either. The Mikey Garcia who fought Jessie Vargas would have beaten Martin, and I wasn’t that wild about Mikey’s showing against Vargas, either. Garcia was flat and trigger-shy against Martin, looked like he had no sincere desire to be there. As we’ve talked about already, he has some real questions to ask of himself right now, the biggest being whether or not he really wants to fight anymore.

With Garcia out, Kudratillo Abdukakhorov comes in at No. 10. Others considered were Eimantas Stanionis, Conor Benn, Josesito Lopez, Rashidi Ellis, and Abel Ramos.

Upcoming Fights: (7) Jaron Ennis vs Thomas Dulorme, Oct. 30 ... (10) Jamal James vs Radzhab Butaev, Oct. 30 ... (2) Terence Crawford vs (4) Shawn Porter, Nov. 20 ... (3) Yordenis Ugas vs Eimantas Stanionis, TBA

Upcoming Fights: (5) Jose Zepeda vs Josue Vargas, Oct. 30 ... (4) Gervonta Davis vs Rolando Romero [lightweight], Dec. 5 ... (1) Josh Taylor vs Jack Catterall, Dec. 18

Upcoming Fights: (1) Teofimo Lopez vs (8) George Kambosos Jr, Nov. 27 ... (2) Vasiliy Lomachenko vs (5) Richard Commey, Dec. 11

Upcoming Fights: (3) Jamel Herring vs (5) Shakur Stevenson, Oct. 23 ... (6) Chris Colbert vs (8) Roger Gutierrez, TBA ... (7) Azinga Fuzile vs Kenichi Ogawa, TBA

Notes: Emanuel Navarrete’s win over Joet Gonzalez was tough and solid, also clear and there’s no need for a rematch despite Mark Kriegel pushing the idea. With the win, I’m pushing Navarrete to No. 1 in the division, because Gary Russell Jr is un-serious. I still think Russell’s skill set — even faded a hair — is a nightmare for anyone in this division, but the man just doesn’t fight, and when he does, he’s happy to not fight top contenders.

That said, I do have the feeling he might get his long-awaited bout with Leo Santa Cruz in December; probably not, but Santa Cruz wants to fight in December, and now it’s clear Russell will not be fighting Rey Vargas, who is staying at 122 and fighting on the Canelo-Plant card. Maybe PBC have something in the hopper with Santa Cruz and Russell finally. Again, probably not — it’s a lot to hope for with, well, both of them, honestly — but the chance seems to be there.

Upcoming Fights: (4) Kid Galahad vs Kiko Martinez, Nov. 13 ... (9) Isaac Dogboe vs Christopher Diaz, Nov. 20

Notes: As mentioned, Rey Vargas will be staying at 122, fighting on the Canelo-Plant show on Nov. 6. If he wins his fight, he’ll be back in the top five here. I’d just put him back in now, but he hasn’t fought since July 2019, so he’d be past the inactive line anyway.

Upcoming Fights: (2) Stephen Fulton Jr vs (3) Brandon Figueroa, Nov. 27 ... (10) Ra’eese Aleem vs Eduardo Baez, Nov. 27 ... (1) Murodjon Akhmadaliev vs (8) Ronny Rios, Nov. 19

Upcoming Fights: (9) Takuma Inoue vs Shingo Wake [junior featherweight], Nov. 11 ... (2) Nonito Donaire vs Reymart Gaballo, TBA ... (3) John Riel Casimero vs Paul Butler, TBA

Upcoming Fights: (1) Juan Francisco Estrada vs (4) Chocolatito Gonzalez, TBA ... (3) Srisaket Sor Rungvisai vs Carlos Cuadras, TBA

Upcoming Fights: (1) Julio Ces Martinez vs (7) McWilliams Arroyo, Nov. 19 ... (2) Sunny Edwards vs Jayson Mama, TBA ... (5) Artem Dalakian vs Luis Concepcion, TBA

Notes: Jonathan Gonzalez’s upset of Elwin Soto gives the Puerto Rican the WBO title, his first world title, and also vaults him into the top five. I’ve also removed Edward Heno, who was about to go two years inactive next week but has nothing scheduled, so whatever, he’s out. Veteran Hekkie Budler — who just returned earlier this year — is in at No. 10.

Upcoming Fights: (4) Elwin Soto vs (6) Jonathan Gonzalez, Oct. 16

Upcoming Fights: (2) Petchmanee CP Freshmart vs Danai Ngiabphukhiaw, Nov. 2 ... (9) Vic Saludar vs Erick Rosa Pacheco, Dec. 9

Upcoming Fights: (1) Canelo Alvarez vs Caleb Plant, Nov. 6 ... (7) Terence Crawford vs Shawn Porter, Nov. 20 ... (5) Teofimo Lopez vs George Kambosos Jr, Nov. 27 ... (8) Josh Taylor vs Jack Catterall, Dec. 18 ... (10) Juan Francisco Estrada vs Chocolatito Gonzalez, TBA

Notes: Made some minor changes. I’ve put Savannah Marshall in at No. 8 following her dominant title defense on Saturday; I just think it’s really hard to watch Marshall fight and say she isn’t clearly one of the top women’s fighters in the world, and we appear to be headed for the highly-anticipated Shields-Marshall fight in 2022, as they’ll share a bill in the UK on Dec. 11. I absolutely love that fight.

Upcoming Fights: (5) Delfine Persoon vs TBA, Nov. 1 ... (6) Mikaela Mayer vs Maiva Hamadouche, Nov. 5 ... (10) Terri Harper vs Alycia Baumgardner, Nov. 13 ... (2) Claressa Shields vs TBA, Dec. 11 ... (8) Savannah Marshall vs TBA, Dec. 11
