BOXXER promoter Ben Shalom tells Sky Sports that will Chris Eubank Jr. successfully getting past what was essentially a tune-up bout on Oct. 16, their team is hoping to move forward with a bout against Liam Williams before the end of the year, continuing to mention December as the target.
“It’s a fight that we want to make. It’s the best fight out there - stylistically, it is amazing. They have a genuine dislike for each other that has been brewing for years...We will be making an offer to Liam so we’ll see if he really wants it. Hopefully we can get it on in December.”
Shalom says he believes that Williams is amendable to a fight against Eubank and that a win there would push Eubank closer towards a world title fight against someone like Gennadiy Golovkin, with whom Shalom says preliminary discussions are already underway, eyeing a May 2022 timetable.
Golovkin is currently scheduled to face Ryoto Murata this December in an IBF middleweight title defense, while Eubank would obviously have to get past Williams, who is coming off a unanimous decision loss to Demetrius Andrade this past April. Eubank and Golovkin appeared to be close to a fight some years back, but that fight fell apart when Eubank didn’t ultimately sign off, paving way for Kell Brook to step in and a bout against Golovkin. That, however, hasn’t stopped Eubank from publicly stating that he still wants the Golovkin fight, so we’ll see if it comes together this time.
