After a nightmare 2020 spent on the shelf, Sky Sports reports that former British super welterweight champion Scott Fitzgerald will ideally return to action in the coming months, kicking off what he hopes will eventually become a title run.

“He should be out by end of March, early April,” Fitzgerald’s manager [Steve] Wood told Sky Sports.

“He’s really looking forward to it. He knows he let a lot of people down, he let himself down more than anybody. He wants to prove a lot of people wrong, that he can turn it around, and get back to where he was and eventually become a world champion.

“Everything is fine now. He’s realised he was going down the wrong path, and he’s straightened himself up. I think the word you’re looking for is he’s 100 per cent clean and fully focused to make a success out of his boxing career.

“He’s had another little girl. He’s got a boy and a girl to support, so he’s got to do it now.”

Fitzgerald’s (14-0, 9 KO) 2020 was essentially a cavalcade of self-inflicted setbacks. He pulled out of a March 7th fight that was meant to set up a rematch with Anthony Fowler due to weight issues, then saw his license suspended following an arrest on suspicion of assault. He ultimately pled guilty to “breach of the peace,” avoiding assault charges in the process, but his fitness as a fighter and functional human being remains in doubt.

Wood claims Fitzgerald’s “straightened himself up,” but a previous stint in rehab failed to last.

As far as ideal opposition aside from the aforementioned Fowler, Fitzgerald wants a European title and ultimately to challenge for a world belt “within the next 18 months.” Fitzgerald hasn’t fought since taking a questionable decision over Ted Cheeseman in October of 2019.
