Gervonta Davis suffers injury in sparring, 2021 return still in the air

Davis was considered a possible next fight for Ryan Garcia, but things are unclear now.

Gervonta “Tank” Davis, who holds the WBA “super world” title at junior lightweight and the WBA “world” (secondary/regular) title at lightweight, has Tweeted that he suffered a hand injury in sparring, putting his first fight date for 2021 up in the air:

The 26-year-old Davis (24-0, 23 KO) is a key young attraction for PBC and Mayweather Promotions, and last fought on Halloween night last year, knocking out Leo Santa Cruz in Texas in a pay-per-view main event.

The extent of whatever the injury is isn’t clear, and Davis also didn’t have anything concrete set anyway, so unless it’s serious — something requiring surgery and rehab — it probably won’t be a noticeable setback as far as return timetable for most of us.

There was some talk of Davis fighting Ryan Garcia next, but that has been complicated by Garcia instead trying to fight Manny Pacquiao, which Golden Boy says won’t happen, but the Garcia and Pacquiao teams are reportedly still discussing.

Anyway, not a lot is happening in boxing at this exact moment, so there’s an update on an injury you might otherwise have not noticed at all.
