Juan Francisco Estrada and Roman “Chocolatito” Gonzalez lived up to every ounce of hype in their long-awaited rematch on DAZN, and if you missed the outstanding, Fight of the Year-level encounter, the highlights up top will give you some idea of the fight we saw for 12 full rounds.
Estrada won a split decision, but that came with a lot of controversy, mostly via the score card of judge Carlos Sucre of Florida, whose 117-111 Estrada tally has been widely ripped by fans, media, and fighters alike.
Estrada (42-3, 28 KO) and Gonzalez (50-3, 41 KO) both said they’re up for a trilogy fight, but the most likely next fight for Estrada, who now holds the WBC and WBA titles at 115 pounds, is against WBC mandatory challenger and ex-champ Srisaket Sor Rungvisai, which will also be a trilogy bout. Rungvisai won on Friday in Thailand (actually it was Saturday morning in Thailand), but in a far less impressive bout.
Saturday’s card also had good action in a pair of other world title fights, with Jessica McCaskill out-pointing Cecilia Braekhus in their welterweight championship rematch, and Hiroto Kyoguchi retaining his 108-pound title against Axel Aragon Vega in a fight unfortunately cut short on injury.
