While Srisaket Sor Rungvisai (49-5-1, 42 KOs) has a fight scheduled for this weekend, taking on Kwanthai Sithmorseng (50-7-1, 27 KOs) in Thailand, he still has an eye towards a future fight against the winner of Juan Francisco Estrada vs Roman Gonzalez, who will also be squaring off this weekend. Rungvisai tells RingTV that he can’t afford to overlook his upcoming opponent, but says he hopes to use this fight as a springboard to show everyone he’s ready to get back to world title contention.
“This fight is very important to me, and I must win with an impressive performance to show the world that I’m more than ready to fight them. I will fight the winner of Estrada and Chocolatito later this year. I have waited for almost two years for this world title opportunity. It’s time and I believe I can do it.”
Rungvisai’s promoter would go on to explain that due to pandemic conditions they had to find the best opponent available to him for the interim, which they believe Sithmorseng is, and say their hope is that he puts up a stern enough challenge to keep Rungvisai sharp and ready to go for tougher fights. But the ultimate hope here is to have Rungvisai back in the ring against either Estrada or Gonzalez by the fall, both of whom he’s fought twice before.
As of now Rungvisai hasn’t been in the ring since an October stoppage win over Jormar Fajardo, his second consecutive win since losing his 2019 rematch and world title to Estrada.
