Boxing events competing head-to-head on Saturday nights is nothing new for fans, and in fact has been increasingly common in the last 10 months or so, since boxing first started emerging from the COVID-19 pandemic with televised events.
But Saturday has an odd one fans will be choosing between.
On Triller pay-per-view (you can order here!), social media celebrity Jake Paul will face former MMA standout Ben Askren in the main event from Atlanta.
On FOX, Premier Boxing Champions presents a pretty typical card, headlined by former 154 lb titlist Tony Harrison facing Bryant Perrella.
The pros of the FOX card are obvious: it doesn’t cost $50 to watch through legal means, and if you’re more a purist, it doesn’t have the YouTube guy and the MMA guy in the main event. And Harrison-Perrella is, at least in my opinion, solid matchmaking, which is pretty rare for the cards FOX pays for anymore.
But there is obvious intrigue with Paul-Askren. It’s unusual. It’s different. If you’re not overly concerned about the sanctity of a sport that hands out championship titles like candy on Halloween, or sanctions brutal mismatch after brutal mismatch every single week, maybe that in itself is enough of a pull. It will definitely not be “the usual,” and who knows what kind of nonsense they might pull out on the show in general?
Anyway, simple question, what will you watch live Saturday? I’m not asking if you’re paying for Paul-Askren, by the way. What are you watching? (“Neither” is definitely an option, “both” is not, like, we get it, you’re a billionaire with 20 TVs, just pick which one you’re more focused on.)
