As former heavyweight titleholder Joseph Parker gets set for a May 1 fight against Derek Chisora, Matchroom promoter Eddie Hearn say Parker is on the verge of scoring another shot at a major world title should he win in this upcoming outing. Parker is currently rated in the top 6 with the WBC, IBF, and WBO sanctioning bodies.

“If he beats Chisora, when these belts become fragmented in probably 2022, this is a really important fight for him.”

Hearn’s mentioning of 2022 is with the expectation that Anthony Joshua and Tyson Fury will twice fight for all the marbles, after which there is a likelihood the belts will be divided due to mandatory title defense obligations.

As for Parker’s upcoming opponent in Chisora, Hearn believes that he doesn’t get the credit he deserves for losing a competitive fight against Oleksandr Usyk, whom he calls a pound-for-pound great. Hearn says Chisora knows a win against Parker here will probably be his last real shot at getting another major heavyweight bout, so expects him to contend vigorously.
