As you’ve probably heard, 48-year-old Oscar De La Hoya is gearing up for a return to boxing, likely on July 3 headlining a Triller Fight Club PPV event, a move that has had mixed reaction but will no doubt bring curious eyes in the end.
De La Hoya hasn’t fought since 2008 and hasn’t exactly lived an active fighter’s lifestyle during his time away, but here’s a little look at him moving around the ring, anyway:
“Shit’s getting real,” De La Hoya wrote on Instagram. “Three months to go and already feel beast mode. Next 30 days I will focus on speed and (shedding) down to 158 lbs, then I start sparring light for timing on punches, and then last three weeks I prepare for the water! Let’s go! I will prove to the world that age is just a fucken number.”
De La Hoya does not have an officially announced opponent, nor is it entirely clear yet whether this will be an actual fight or an exhibition, and that’s a huge difference in every way. But Oscar has said repeatedly he wants it to be an actual fight, and given his power in the sport, celebrity status, connections, etc., he shouldn’t have much trouble finding somewhere to license him if he can simply pass his medicals.
As for an opponent, the main rumor has been they want a “UFC guy,” which could mean any number of things, but it’s probably not going to be easy to get someone currently actually signed with UFC, given Dana White — who hates De La Hoya, to put it bluntly — would have to sign off.
But we’ll see. Are you impressed with how Oscar looks at all?
