Teofimo Lopez Sr: Josh Taylor ‘punking out,’ scared to fight his son

Lopez Sr offers some critical words of the recently crowned undisputed junior welterweight champion.

Wil Esco is an assistant editor of Bad Left Hook and has been covering boxing for SB Nation since 2014.

During this media session captured by Fight Hub TV, Teofimo Lopez Sr explains how he and his son are seeking a match up against newly-minted undisputed junior welterweight champion Josh Taylor, saying Taylor is scared to face his son because he knows he can’t match up. Check out some of what Lopez Sr. had to say below.

“We on top of the game and my son is undisputed at 135, I don’t care what anybody says, and everybody’s gonna find out sooner or later,” Lopez Sr. said. “We want Josh Taylor. We want Josh Taylor next but he’s already punking out because he knows what’s going on. There’s no way Josh could beat my son. He got no skills. He’s got a little bit of good skills here and there but he doesn’t think like my son, like you’re playing a checkers match against a chess match.

“We don’t need to throw a lot of punches, we just set you up, bro. And (Taylor) knows it, that’s why he’s scared. I want Josh Taylor next and if he doesn’t take Teofimo Lopez you know he’ scared.

“He ain’t better than my son. Never, ever. My son is faster, stronger, smarter — smarter, that’s the game plan right there. You gotta be smarter and you gotta know how to adapt. He never adapted to Ramirez, Ramirez took the last four rounds. That showed me he ain’t ready for us. So stop your bullshit, Josh. It’s the biggest fight to be made. You need to fight my son to show the whole world who you are.

“We gonna try to get this fight with Haney if this punk-ass dude from England doesn’t want to fight us, because he’s scared, he’s got no freakin’ cojones. He’s a five, six round fighter. That’s all he is and Ramirez showed it.”

[Editor’s note: Taylor is from Scotland, not England.]
