Less than two weeks from fight night, Joshua Buatsi finally has an opponent for his turn on DAZN’s May 15th Terri Harper-Hyun Mi Choi card: France’s Daniel Blenda Dos Santos.
The fight will be Buatsi’s (13-0, 11 KO) first under the tutelage of new trainer Virgil Hunter. The 28-year-old light heavyweight was last seen stopping the unexpectedly game Marko Calic in October 2020.
“I’ve got an unbeaten opponent, that makes him ambitious,” said Buatsi. “Obviously it’s the first fight under Virgil, so it’s should be interesting. I’m looking forward to showing what I’ve been working on with Virgil. He’s going to want to hold onto his undefeated record, as I am. When that’s at stake you really dig deep.
“It’s mainly the style that I like. Each of his fighters translate it differently. The public haven’t seen how good I can be, or I will be. I want to unlock the potential that I have got. This addition to the team will 100 per cent bring the best out of me.”
Matchroom’s press release calls Dos Santos (15-0, 8 KO) “a fellow unbeaten contender,” which is technically true in the sense that he hasn’t lost and is presumably attempting to contend. He’s only ever had one eight-rounder and his last six victories came over opponents with losing records.
I suppose Buatsi’s handlers aren’t taking any chances after the near-disaster against Calic, but it’s definitely not the sort of fight he should be having at this stage of his career.
The card also features Gamal Yafai vs. Jason Cunningham, Tommy McCarthy vs. Alexandru Jur, and Lerrone Richards vs. Giovanni De Carolis.
